About IIMSAM

The Intergovernmental Institution for the Use of Spirulina Against Malnutrition (IIMSAM) is an autonomous, treaty-based intergovernmental organization that has been accredited as a Permanent Observer to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) since 2003. IIMSAM was established through an international agreement concluded among sovereign States, and its founding treaty has been formally registered with the United Nations Secretariat and recorded in the United Nations Treaty Series (UNTS Nos. 37542–37543) in accordance with Article 102 of the Charter of the United Nations. The organization is mandated to promote the scientific and evidence-based use of micro-algae, particularly Spirulina, as a sustainable and cost-effective nutritional intervention to combat malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. IIMSAM’s mandate and activities are aligned with the objectives of the United Nations system and contribute directly to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with particular emphasis on Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger), as well as broader goals related to health, nutrition security, and human development.
